First Aid Training for Activists

Fight the power, do no harm

logo Due to the effective use of mass nonviolent demonstrations, numerous individuals and organizations will be exercising freedom of speech during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games and courageously and nonviolently refusing cooperation with injustice.

Power itself is not derived through violence, though in governmental form it is usually violent in nature. To further prepare activists, a group of health workers called the Black Cross Health Collective based in Portland, Oregon are coming to Salt Lake City to hold a first aid training.

There will be a special movie screening of "Fire In The Eyes", a documentary about pepper spray use against nonviolent activists. Activists will be taught how to document police actions, brutality, and injuries during these demonstrations. This training will also teach activists how to keep ourselves and each other safe in the streets.

After the WTO protests, The Black Cross Health Collective formed due to realizing the need for medical care that's specific to the radical community. The workers from the Collective have medical experience as nurse practioners, nurses, EMT's, clinical herbalists, and more. They have done first aid trainings all over the US and have provided medical support at local and national demos.

The Gay Straight Animal Rights Alliance is sponsoring this workshop to help ensure the most nonviolent, peaceful, and progressive demonstrations possible.
