About The Talk:

"Animal liberation" and "gay liberation" are two phrases that are rarely heard in the same sentence. But, in fact, the liberation of gay and lesbian people, and indeed the liberation of all people, depends upon the liberation of animals. We must come to understand this, just as we must understand how different forms of bias against people, such as racism and sexism, are interconnected.

This talk will explore the linkages between the struggle for animal rights and various struggles for human rights and will provide examples of both local efforts (such as GSARA) and international initiatives (such as the Global Hunger Alliance) which represent the most innovative approaches to our shared stuggle for a world of liberty and justice for all.

About The Speaker:

Pattrice Le-Muire Jones is the co-editor of the forthcoming anthology, "Out for the Animals: Queering Animal Liberation." She has worked for gay and lesbian liberation since the 1970s and has also worked in the feminist and anti-racist movements. She coordinates the Global Hunger Alliance, which is an international coalition of environmental, social justice, and animal liberation organizations. She lives in rural Maryland, where she and her partner run the Eastern Shore Chicken Sanctuary. The sanctuary will be featured on an upcoming episode of the PBS series "In the Life."
